DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Coming-of-age films aren’t something you see a lot in Mexico, and yet it’s a genre that has always spoken deeply to me. So from the very beginning, we all had a feeling this was going to be a special ride.
We were proud to finance part of the project with a government grant that supports just one short film each year. And I was especially lucky to have an incredible crew on board. Some of us have been working together for years, and that familiarity always makes the process more fluid and meaningful.
What really drew me in was the idea of a character who starts falling out of love with something he used to enjoy deeply—not because of the activity itself, but because of the people who’ve now become part of it. I think that’s something we can all relate to. Sometimes, when something turns into an imposition, an obligation, the fun fades away. It’s like with veggies—we enjoy them more when we know we don’t have to eat them.
I’m truly proud of CAMPEÓN, and deeply grateful to every single person who helped bring it to life. If you get to watch it, I really hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.
