ABOUT THE FILM
As a young runner prepares for the big race, the strain from his parents' push for excellence puts his love of the sport to test.
Coming of age films are very rare in Mexico, and the subgenre is one of my favorites. So we all knew since the beginning that CAMPEÓN was going to be a special ride.
We pay (part of it) with a State grant that we won, where the government funds one short film a year. I was very lucky to have on board the best crew ever, with some of them I have been working for a long time and the short-hand always helps.
I was fascinated with the exploration of a conflicted character that starts to enjoy less and less his long time hobby; and that the problem is not the sport itself, but all the people that are now part of it. I believe that everybody can relate to the theme of losing interest in something because it becomes an imposition. We all eat our veggies happier when we have the option of not doing it!
I'm very proud of CAMPEÓN, and I will be forever in debt to the cast and crew that put their heart and soul into this film. If you have the chance to watch it, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.
